Cuentos de Chicago y otras tierras

A series of literary events curated by Contratiempo within the framework of Chicago’s unique cultural and linguistic perspective on the Latino experience. This program highlights Latino musical genres and performance well-represented in Chicago with a focus on the interaction between word and song, including hip hop, performance art and Son Jarocho music (which incorporates poetry and spoken word in its structure).
#1: Tell Me a Story

When: Mid February, 1.5 hour

Curator: Contratiempo Editorial Board

Musical Curator: Catalina Maria Johnson

Expected collaborators:

Pablo Helguera’s Donceles Bookstore Project , Chicago Folklore Ensemble, Sones de México, Zacbé Pichardo, Prohibido Leer

Readings from Latin American and Latino literary masterpieces selected from the Donceles Bookstore Project and local authors work (Hopscotch, A veces llovía en Chicago, etc), and brought to life with live accompaniment by local musicians. Prohibido Leer coordinators will audition readers.

 

#2: Poems, sights and sounds

When: End of March, 1.5 Hr Program

Audiovisual Poetry reading

Curator: Gerardo Cardenas

Visual Curator: Calixta

Staged readings of Chicago poetry and short stories accompanied by uniquely created visual projections that reflect sites and sounds of our multicultural and multilingual city.

 

#3: Stories in Translation: “Monolinguals Allowed”

When: End of April, 2-Hour Program

Curator: Moira Pujols

Format: Poems in translation, Readings and Workshop

Panelists: Poet Raul Zurita, Gerardo Cardenas, Xanath Caraza, Daniel Borzutsky

A discussion on translation generated from monolingual response to the same lines in poems read in Spanish and English and expressed by the audience in oral, written, or physical language during the interactive workshop.

 

#4:The song as story, the song as poem

When: Mid May, 2 hour program
